The focus of this series of articles is to learn a bit more about the lives behind the faces we meet at our HD events, such as our support group meetings, Walk, etc.

I recently had an opportunity to meet up with Kurt Poppe. When Judy and I attended our first Support Group meeting in 2010, Kurt and Serette were among the first people we met. Already a veteran of more than a decade of HD experience, Kurt became one of my ‘go-to’ resources.

Kurt shared with me that he is a native of Greater Cincinnati with roots in Fairfield, Colerain Township, and Harrison. At one point, his family lived in a historic converted stone brewery, which still stands today. This may have sparked his interest today in the history of our area.

For many years, Kurt built his career as a machinist for Cincinnati Milacron. Working creatively with metal seems to have influenced his interest today in art, drawing, and sketching. Also, during this time, Kurt and Serette moved from their home in Lebanon to Clermont County to enjoy their desire to own and ride horses.

After Serette’s passing in 2012, Kurt met his current wife, Cherry. Together, they enjoy Tai-chi, studying ‘mindfulness’, taking OLLI / UC classes and celebrating friendships built around visiting Cincinnati area museums and historic sites. And, of course, this always involves conversations shared at local eateries – Particularly Coffee Shops!

Well, I secured a few recommendations of Kurt’s favorites which I am looking forward to visiting soon!
